Not Your Typical Rush

When I first came to campus, I thought I’d rush one of the coed frats to get the traditional Greek life experience. But my freshman roommate invited me to a Rho Epsilon Pi info session, and I went with her just to see what it was like. I ended up loving it right then and there. The energy was so relaxed and welcoming, it felt like a big friend group made up of girls from all grades. There isn’t the same party emphasis that the frats have, but that’s what makes it special. Whether we’re doing a Taylor Swift listening night, going on a hike, or throwing a party, the same people show up because we genuinely enjoy being together.

What I love most is that Rho Ep isn’t exclusive. As long as you do orientation activities, you’re in, it’s never about competing for a spot. The goal is to make sure everyone knows each other and feels like they could text someone to grab a meal anytime. I never imagined I’d end up as vice president, soon to be president, of something like this. But as I’ve moved up, I’ve realized what really makes our space different: we intentionally seek out people who might not otherwise join something like this. I once described it as “finding the people who don’t want to be found; ”the quiet, kind girl in your class who shares your music taste or sense of humor. That kind of intentionality makes every member feel valued and recognized for who they are.

As I’ve taken on leadership, I’ve realized mentoring younger members isn’t about telling them what to do, it’s about helping them discover what matters to them, develop a voice,. I try to listen first, notice the quiet or hesitant members, and create space for them to step in when they’re ready. It can be as simple as encouraging someone to lead an event, giving feedback on an idea, or just checking in to make sure they feel included. Being intentional in this way helps them feel confident and valued, and I’ve learned that the most meaningful guidance often comes from small, consistent gestures rather than big speeches.

Rho Ep creates a space where you don’t have to prove yourself to belong, and that sense of comfort and authenticity is what keeps me excited to lead and grow the organization. Being part of it has made me realize that community and genuine connection matter more than appearances or status, and that’s why I love being part of Rho Ep.
